North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO)
The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is a 29-state military alliance spanning Europe and North America, and was conceived on the 4th of April 1949. The alliance is perhaps best known as the counterweight to the Warsaw Pact throughout the Cold War, and relied on Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty (an attack on one is an attack on all) as the cornerstone of a policy of deterrence. After the end of the Cold War, NATO has played a more active role in global security, notably in the Middle East and the Balkans.
United Nations Security Council (UNSC)
Perhaps the best known organ of the United Nations, the Security Council is made up of 15 member states: of these, 5 are permanent members while the other 10 are elected, with the Permanent 5 (P5) representing the chief Allied powers of the Second World War - the USA, the UK, France, Russia, and China. Security Council resolutions are binding in law, and since its inception the body has represented a forum for all actors involved in global security matters to voice aloud their opinions.
United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC)
Headquartered in Geneva, the Human Rights Council was established in 2006 with the aim of promoting and protecting human rights around the world. The body has 47 member states which are elected by the General Assembly from the UN's regional groups. The UNHCR holds plenary sessions 3 times per year, and the current president is Mr Vojislav Šuc of Slovenia.
Historical Crisis
A crisis simulation is not your average MUN plenary session, but is set in a historical or fictional context in which you will be tasked with leading a faction to victory. Victory is judged by events, and all you need is a tactics l (twisted) mind to put the tool you have to good use. A challenge for MUN-ers of all levels, but fun for everyone.
